Migrating a Child Domain Exchange Mailbox to a Central Exchange Mailbox
When moving from a department that hosts its own Exchange server to an area that uses central Exchange, either of the processes below can be used to migrate a child domain Exchange mailbox to central Exchange:
Manual Method
Note: The manual method should always be used to migrate from a College of Business Exchange account to central Exchange.
- Archive any mail, calendar, contact, etc. items stored within the child domain Exchange account. Saving items to a PST file generally works well for this.
- Go to https://eid.colostate.edu and click the "Change E-mail Address" link.
- Once logged in, the "No Central Exchange" option should already be selected and a child domain e-mail address should be populated in the corresponding text field. Update the e-mail address to a non-Exchange e-mail address, such as ename@lamar.colostate.edu and click the "Change E-mail" button.
- Click the "Modify E-mail Address" link.
- At this point, the central Exchange options should now be available. Select "Central Exchange for E-mail and Calendaring" and click the "Change E-mail" button. Upon completing this step, the central Exchange mailbox will be created within 5 minutes.
- To avoid having duplicate entries in the Global Address List, contact the Exchange administrator (or IT Help Desk) responsible for managing the child Exchange account and ask that they either remove your old mailbox or hide it from the GAL.
Automated Method
- Verify that the mailbox is under 500 MB. If you are unsure of the size of your mailbox, the Exchange administrator for the child Exchange environment hosting the mailbox should be able to tell you this information. If it is over 500 MB, please delete any unneeded e-mail and/or archive mail to a pst so that the resulting size of the mailbox is less than 500 MB.
- Send an e-mail to Exchange Help requesting that the mailbox be migrated. Please include your eName (to which your central Exchange mailbox will be attached) along with your child domain Exchange account name or e-mail address.
- Upon receiving the e-mail, a central Exchange administrator will contact you to schedule a time to migrate your mailbox. As part of the migration, all your existing mail, contact, calendar, task, etc. items will be moved to your newly-created central Exchange account and your old mailbox will be removed. One feature of using the automated approach is that your old e-mail address(es) will be "attached" to your new mailbox on central Exchange, which will allow e-mail sent to those addresses to continue to be delivered - note, however, that all mail sent from central Exchange will be in the form of first.last@colostate.edu.
