Configuring Outlook Anywhere from on Campus or Using the VPN Client

The process to configure Outlook 2007 to connect to Exchange using the "Outlook Anywhere" functionality of Exchange is outlined below. Note that if you are attempting to configure Outlook from home, you must first login to the CSU VPN. If you do not have the CSU VPN client installed, alternative intructions are available. The steps outlined assume this is your first time opening Outlook, which will result in the setup wizard being launched. If you are not prompted with the account setup wizard, you can configure Outlook with an e-mail account from within Outlook by going to "Tools" > "Account Settings" > "E-mail" or by accessing the Mail icon in the Control Panel and updating or adding a new profile.

Instructions

  1. If you are configuring Outlook from home, login to the CSU VPN. (Learn more about the CSU VPN)
  2. Open Outlook from the Start Menu.
  3. Click "Next >" on the Outlook 2007 Startup Wizard.
  4. On the "Account Configuration" window, click "Yes" when asked if you would like to configure an E-mail account
  5. On the "Add New E-mail Account" screen, check the "Manually configure server settings or additional server types" checkbox and click "Next >".

  6. Select the "Microsoft Exchange" radio button and click "Next >".
  7. Enter "Exchange.colostate.edu" as the Microsoft Exchange Server and enter your eID as the User Name.

  8. Click "Check Name". At this point, you may be prompted to enter a User name and Password. If this is the case, enter your user name as "colostate\ename", enter your password, and click OK. You will notice that the server name has changed and your name has been underlined.

  9. Click on the "More Settings..." button.
  10. Click on the "Connection" tab. Check the "Connect to Microsoft Exchange using HTTP" checkbox and click the "Exchange Proxy Settings" button.

  11. Specify the following connection settings and click "OK":
    • URL to use (text field labeled "https://"): mail.colostate.edu
    • Check the "Connect using SSL only checkbox" - it should be checked by default.
    • Check the "Only connect to proxy server..." checkbox and enter the principal name "msstd:mail.colostate.edu" in the text field.
    • Check the "On fast networks, connect using HTTP first..." checkbox.
    • Check the "On slow networks, connect using HTTP first..." checkbox.
    • Leave the default choice for the authentication method.

  12. Click "OK" on the screen displaying the Connection tab.
  13. Click "Next >" on the Add New E-mail Account wizard.
  14. Click "Finish >" on the Add New E-mail Account wizard to complete the wizard.
  15. Outlook is now configured to connect to your Exchange mailbox using Outlook Anywhere. If you are a home user who used the VPN to configure Outlook, you should be able to open Outlook and connect to your Exchange account without first logging in to the VPN. Note that you may be prompted for a user name and password each time you launch Outlook.
