Change Your Email Address or Display Name

Information about how to change your name or e-mail address as it appears in Office 365 are provided below.

Change Your First Name (ex: opt to use "Mike" instead of "Michael")

Users can change their first name using tools available at https://eid.colostate.edu. Note that there are 2 different processes to follow depending if a user needs to (1) Change the way their first name appears in the online directory and Outlook's Global Address List or (2) Change the first name portion of their first.last@colostate.edu e-mail address. If you want your first name updated for both purposes, you must complete both steps.

  • To change your first name as it appears in the CSU Directory and Outlook's Global Address List, go to https://eid.colostate.edu > click "Modify Your eID" > click "Change Preferred First Name" and submit the resulting form. Note that preferred first name updates may take up to 48 hours to be reflected in all systems.
  • To update the first name portion of your first.last@colostate.edu e-mail address, go to https://eid.colostate.edu > click "Modify Your eID" > click "Email Settings" and submit the resulting form. When you change your e-mail address, both your new and old addresses will continue deliver to the same mailbox for 6 months to allow for the transition. After 6 months have passed, e-mail sent to the old address will not be deliverable.

Update Settings so that Your Full Name Appears in the Global Address List and E-mail Sent by You Shows Your Name as "Last,First" rather than "ename"

By default, Associate eIDs have directory privacy settings enabled which results in a person's name appearing in the Global Address List as their eName. Also, e-mails sent by the user have a reply to address formatted as ename@colostate.edu. This setting can be updated by your area's HR representative using the instructions posted at https://hr.colostate.edu/wp-content/uploads/sites/25/2020/06/hr-system-user-guide-12-associates.pdf.

Still doesn't show up? Check that the employee doesn't also have a concurrent affiliate appointment, which will prevent this setting from taking effect.

Change your Legal Last Name or Use a Professional or Preferred Last Name

Faculty and staff users can change their legal last name or use a professional/preferred last name for use in the online directory and for their first.last@colostate.edu address. Please consult your local HR liason to have a professional last name set up. An updated last name will automatically be used in the online directory and for Outlook's Global Address List. However, to have an updated last name applied to a user's first.last@colostate.edu address, a person must go to https://eid.colostate.edu > click "Modify Your eID" > click "Email Settings" and submit the resulting form - for people with both a legal last name and professional last name, a drop-down list will show both on the Email Settings form.
