Microsoft Teams - Recording Meetings to OneDrive for Business or SharePoint
Teams Meetings recorded after summer 2021 will be saved to OneDrive for Business for users or SharePoint for meetings recorded within a Team Channel. Refer to Microsoft's announcement and the FAQs below for more information.
FAQs
Microsoft has mandated this change effective summer 2021.
What is the difference between a Meeting and a Channel Meeting?
Teams Meetings are just regular Outlook meetings but with a online meeting component. They are scheduled the same way traditional meetings were scheduled through Outlook and/or through Teams. Channel Meetings are meetings scheduled on a channel inside of a Team. When you schedule a Channel Meeting, all members of that Team and/or Channel automatically have access to the meeting without needing an invite. Channel Meetings can be added through the regular “new meeting” scheduling process in Teams or can be scheduled directly from the channel.
Where will recordings be stored?
Regular Teams Meetings will be stored in a special folder labeled Recordings in the OneDrive site of the person who clicked the record button.
For meetings hosted in the channel of a Microsoft Team, the recording is stored in the Team's site documentation library (Files tab for that channel) in a folder named Recordings. Example:
Teams name - Channel name/Documents/Recordings
Who can view recorded meetings saved to OneDrive/Teams?
For regular Teams Meetings, all meeting invitees, except for external users, will automatically have access to the recording and can find a link to the meeting in the chat section of Teams. Similar to the previous solution in Stream, additional users, groups and external users can be granted access by the person who started the recording.
For Channel Meetings, permissions are inherited from the owners and members listed in the channel or Team.
Are transcripts and closed captioning available for Teams Meetings recorded to OneDrive/SharePoint?
Closed captions are currently available only for Teams meetings that had closed captioning enabled during the meeting. - if captioning is needed, currently, it must be enabled at the beginning of each meeting.
Transcription turns on automatically when the "Record" option is pressed. If transcripts need to be edited or added to a video after the fact, that video can be manually uploaded back to Stream to generate or edit a transcript file.
Closed captions are supported for Teams meeting recordings for 60 days from when the meeting is recorded.
Closed captions aren't fully supported if the Teams Meeting Recording is moved or copied from its original location on OneDrive for Business or SharePoint.
What about my existing recordings in Stream?
Videos and meetings stored in Microsoft Stream will remain in Stream for now. The Division of IT is monitoring Microsoft announcements for future plans for Stream content and services and will post additional information as it becomes available.
How can I watch a Teams meeting recorded to OneDrive/SharePoint?
Recordings will play in the browser directly from OneDrive for Business or SharePoint. If you choose to download the file, the recording will play using your default media player.
The following limitations exist for Teams OneDrive recording storage today:
- Recording owners can not block a user's ability to download a video.
- Closed captions aren't fully supported if the Teams Meeting Recording is moved or copied from its original location on OneDrive for Business or SharePoint.
- Variable playback speed in OneDrive/SharePoint video player is not supported
