Setting up Outlook for Office 365

The process to set up Outlook is outlined below. The instructions assume this is your first time opening Outlook, which will result in the setup wizard being launched. If you are not prompted with the account setup wizard when opening Outlook, launch it from within Outlook under "File" > "Account Settings" button > "Account Settings..." option > "New".

Note: If you have previously configured Outlook and you need to create a new Outlook profile (for example, after your mailbox has migrated to Office 365), please refer to the instructions to Create a New Profile for Outlook.

  1. Home Users Only: If you are configuring Outlook on a home PC, it is recommended that you log in to https://secure.colostate.edu and intiate a secure session. Doing so will significantly speed up the process of conifiguring Outlook. Once the initial setup is complete, you do NOT need to initiate a secure connection in order to use Outlook in future sessions.
  2. Click "Next" on the Outlook welcome screen. (New setup only)
  3. If prompted with a question asking if you want to set up Outlook to connect to an email account, click "Yes" and then click "Next " to continue.
  4. On the Auto Account Setup screen under E-mail Account, your e-mail address may be filled in automatically based on the account you used to log in to your computer. If they are not filled in automatically, enter your e-mail address as first.last@colostate.edu (or ename@colostate.edu for secondary eIDs) and leave the password field blank.   5. Click Next to continue.
  6. Outlook will auto-configure your Exchange Online settings using the information you provided. When prompted to log in, enter your username as eName@colostate.edu (the @colostate.edu portion is required) in the User Name field along with your eID password in the Password field. If you want Outlook to remember your credentials without entering them in each time, select the option to "Remember my credentials." Click OK. Windows security window username and password prompt
  7. You will see a message indicating the account was successfully configured. Optionally, you may click the "Change account settings" checkbox to configure advanced settings. Otherwise, click "Finish" to complete the wizard:
  8. Each time you start Outlook you may be asked to enter your credentials. Enter "eName@colostate.edu" in the User Name field along with your eID password in the Password field when prompted.
